What is the menopause transition from the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)?
In TCM, menopause is a profound transformation. It’s the winding down of our fertile expression – where the energy once used for reproduction turns inward to support our next life stage. This energy is known as Essence or Jing. I’ve adopted the word Maturessence to describe this shift, inspired by my students.
Essence is like energetic DNA. It’s inherited at conception and shaped throughout life. It governs our development, reproduction, and aging. It moves in cycles – seven years for women, eight for men. At key life stages – birth, puberty, first sexual experience, pregnancy, and menopause – essence shifts dramatically. These turning points are powerful but also vulnerable moments where patterns can heal or become blocked.
