NUTRITION – A new study presented at the American Society for Nutrition annual meeting – and covered in Time – brings good news for coffee drinkers. Researchers followed 47,000 female nurses under 60 for 30 years and found those who aged well – living to at least 70 with good physical, cognitive, and mental health – drank about 315 mg of caffeine a day, mostly from coffee. Each additional cup (up to five) was linked to a 2–5% greater chance of healthy aging.
Tea, decaf, and soda didn’t offer the same benefit – in fact, more soda meant lower odds. Researchers point to coffee’s unique compounds that may reduce inflammation and support vascular and metabolic health. Still, it’s early days – the study hasn’t been peer-reviewed, and it’s observational, not proof of cause. Bottom line: moderate coffee intake (2–4 cups a day) seems to support aging well – for those who already enjoy it.
